The type style dates to the Middle Ages when all letterforms were created with pen and paper. Old English typefaces are also called black letter or fraktur (Latin for “broken”) fonts. It is characterized by many elaborate and broken strokes for each letter. The Old English type category is the oldest and considered to be the most recognizable style. Sans serifs are used from the smallest of typefaces to the largest with ease. In digital and web applications serifs are most often used for large-sized type. Sans serifs tend to be preferred online because serifs and alternating thick and thin strokes can be hard to render well on screens, especially at small sizes. Today, we use italics as a design detail or for emphasis when writing.ġ734: William Caslon created a typeface which features straighter serifs and much more obvious contrasts between thin and bold strokes. It was far more readable than blackletter, and caught on quickly.ġ501: Aldus Manutius created italics – a way to fit more words onto a page, saving the printer money. Guttenburg also created the first typeface, blackletter – it was dark, fairly practical, and intense, but not very legible.ġ470: Nicolas Jenson created Roman Type, inspired by the text on ancient roman buildings. Up until this point, all written materials were done by hand, and were very costly to purchase.
